Twitter is a lot of fun, at first I was against it.

But you can reply to people your following or that are following you by putting an @ sign infront of their name in your tweets.

and popular topics are cited with the # sign. You'll catch on. I did Smile

It's a social network type of website. U sign up like any other website. It's something like a blog but it's 160 characters & under. Or even like a diary U write what is on ur mind or what you are doing. The more people you follow (have them as a friend) the more followers you get. Eventually U get people reading what U write. It's fun to know what your favorite celebs are doing. Some will even write to you. Smile I feel like I know them more through twitter. You will get the hang of it. It is very easy because it doesn't have that many features that get you confused.

There's no one way to use Twitter.

You can use Twitter to publish short messages. Each short message, or Tweet, that you publish is then automatically seen by your "followers." Every Tweet also appears on the Twitter profile of the user who sent it, for example, Barack Obama's Tweets are located at http://www.twitter.com/BarackObama/.

You can use Twitter to read the short messages published by others. When you "follow" another Twitter user, then every time you log in to Twitter, you'll see the short messages published by that user. If you follow the Twitter accounts of people you are interested in, then Twitter becomes a simple and powerful tool for keeping up-to-date on them. For example, if you follow a friend, then you will know what your friend is Tweeting about. If you follow ten friends, then you'll know what each of your ten friends is Tweeting about, and so on. Some Twitter accounts are set up by newspapers, celebrities, or people who send messages about a specific topic -- following these kinds of Twitter users keeps you up-to-date on things that interest you.

You can also use Twitter to search for recent information. From twitter.com, you can search for any keyword, and Twitter will show you the latest Tweets that mention your search term. For example, if you search for "earthquake," you will see messages sent from around the world that might indicate where an earthquake was just experienced.

Twitter has developed some interesting communication conventions. You asked whether you can "respond to people" or have a conversation on Twitter. If you mention another Twitter user by using an @ -- for example @BarackObama -- then your message will be "directed" at Barack Obama. Note that these messages are also public -- so if you search Twitter for all Tweets containing @BarackObama, you will see what messages the President is getting on Twitter right now.

Another Twitter convention is the Re-Tweet. When someone reads a Tweet that they think is interesting or important, then they will often resend, or Re-Tweet, the message on their own Twitter profile. Re-Tweets are usually started with the letters RT, followed by an @ and then the name of the Twitter user you're Re-Tweeting. For example, "RT @BarackObama: We’ve saved 400,000+ teachers’ jobs with the Recovery Act."

Yet another Twitter convention is the shortened website link. Because Tweets are limited to only 140 characters, it is often impossible to include a long website address (like http://j.mp/bQ-A -- which, when clicked, automatically send you to the original website. In this manner, Twitter can be used to share photos, videos, and other kinds of media stored on the internet.
