Was my friend being insensitive?
So, my friend and I met at church. We went to the same school and church for two years, but we've been friends for 3 (she's in college now). So, I told her that I've been very interested in Islam and that I'm going to a mosque next week. I told her that I bought a hijab, and that I didn't want anyone to know about it yet because I'm not committing to anything right now. This was all on Facebook. We have youth nights at the church on Wednesdays, and during the night, she confronted me about what I'd said- she was supported on Facebook, and when we met, but after the conversation ended, she turned around and pronounced sort of loudly that I was converting to Islam. I quickly told her to stop and she did, but my brother seemed suspicious. My family, mostly my dad, wouldn't want me to be anything but Christian, so I asked her to keep quiet. But maybe she was joking around...
She's not forcing anything on me...I just think it was rude of her to announce that, even if it was meant to be in a playful manner Ads |

Yes, your friend is being insensitive. Nobody has the right to force their religious affiliation on others; you're allowed to believe in what you want. A good friend would be supportive of you, even if her beliefs are different than yours. Don't let her stop you from finding out what works best for you. Islam also tends to be very misunderstood in this day and age, so your friend may see the religion in a negative light. People with limited understanding of Islam often look at the Qur'an at face value or hold on to their misinterpretations when there is more to it than they know...... If she isn't forcing anything on you than it's not as bad, but you should speak to her in private and tell her how you felt about that and that you didn't want to be held to anything you weren't committed too. Explain that you would like to explore religion with some amount of privacy and do not need the extra attention.
