Why do people want more followers on Twitter?

I can understand why you would want to follow lots of people, so that you get lots of tweets to read, but why would you want lots of people to follow you? I see people asking for more followers all the time.

Obviously those kind of people are very socially inept and insecure and need a lot of attention.

No other reason.

Before all this technology which is only about 25 years people actually went out and met other people in the flesh and used a quaint form of communication called conversation!

People are so lazy now you could quite easily imagin that they would like to become a race of telepaths and then you wouldn't have to even use a keyboard either!

Having heard some of the things written on Twitter it's hardly surprising.
