Portland ME is a nice city. I don't live far from there, about an hour south in a little town called Kittery. They have a Double-A Minor league team called Portland Seadogs, a member of the Eastern League and affiliate of Boston RedSox. THey also have an American Hockey League team called Portland Pirates, affiliated with Anaheim Ducks.

They have a nice running trail up near Hadlock Field(Portland Seadogs). Plenty of bars and novelty shops near the Old Port neighborhood

I can't tell you much about the job market as I live in Kittery. There are plenty of businesses though (Shipyard brewery, tv/radio stations and such).

About two hours from Boston, an Hour from Portsmouth NH. A couple hours south of Bangor(I think) New England is a good place to live.

I work in Portland, but live north of there.Portland Maine is an amazing city, its small and user friendly, with lots of little very different neighborhoods, each with their own feel and personality.Munjoy Hill,Deering, and the Old Port are all active and diverse in population and activities, that cater to varying crowds.Theres a very active music and alternative scene - and tons of history too!
Is it expensive? Yes and No.Yes rates for rent are climbing steadily, especially in the Old Port area & Monument square. Its less than Boston, however.Everything else is fairly reasonable. There is a public transportation system - buses.
But that means its growing. The job market will depend on what your looking for.
Im NOT a city girl by any stretch of the imagination, but I like working there.
