Why have I got inappropriate links mentioned to my twitter account?

Over the past few weeks, I have been noticing random people mentioning me in posts, but putting a link in it. I click on the link and the result is horrendous - often offending. I won't post a link, becaus it's too offensive. Any ideas?

These are twitter bots/marketers who tend to extensively promote their pages or products.

They are everywhere! You can't avoid them. For example, you just tweet about 'Steve Jobs' and a lot of bots would start to mention you.

The best thing to prevent them from doing such is to make your tweets private. This happens all the time when your profile is public.
