How can I stop everything I do on facebook from showing up in that annoying running news feed?

I really do not want everyone in the world to know what I am doing on facebook. Is there any way to stop my information from being posted on that? I filled out a volunteer application and sent a facebook message to the organization that I completed my application but I don't want work to think I am looking for another job or something. I am friends on facebook with co-workers. This stupid feed is annoying.
