Some parts of my life are private and I don't want everyone knowing about those parts. Can my followers be split into groups that are public and others that are private?

It's not possible to do that with Twitter. What you can do is create two twitter accounts, one private and one public and split your followers up like that. Unless you accept them to follow your private account, they won't be able to see who you follow.
