Far as I've been able to make out from my limited time on Twitter, it looks like you need to mutually follow the other person (e.g. They have you added to the list of people they follow, You need to have them on the list of people you follow). Otherwise you can only communicate with the other person via replying to their posts.

It depends.

I hate it when people start answers with those two words, but in this case...

IT's TRUE

*** Are you attempting to send a message to the entire Twitter sphere? ***

There is a blank box at the top of our home page where you can type your 140 character message and press send. Your message will then be directed to everyone who is currently following you. If you have something really REALLY good to say add this to the end of your tweet "Pls RT" and some will even retweet your message to all of their followers for you. Sweet.

*** Perhaps you want to send a public message with a focus to a specific person like @BodyByChocolate ***

In this case you would follow the exact same processes as above but include @BodyByChocolate in your message. To accomplish this, most people put the User ID at the front of the message. However, with just a bit more creativity you can merge the User ID into any part of the message and it still accomplishes the same goal.

*** What if I want to tell @BodyByChocolate that his zipper is down in a way that no one else will here? ***

First, @BodyByChocolate will have to be following you. No worries there... I follow everyone and only stop if they do something stupid at which point I might even block and report to @Spam.

Once that is done just swites the @ for a D and it will be sent to me privately. That would look like this.

D BodyByChocolate

Or, from the drop down list on the direct message page you can select my name and send me a private or direct message that way.

*** Replying to messages received ***

You can also reply to @'s & D's once they are received. My opinion on this point is that Twitter does a bad job of putting this utility together. That's the reason I use TweetDeck, which can be installed for free, to respond to most all messages that I receive. The other thing I love about TweetDeck is that it tells me when I have a spelling error, and I do have spelling errors.

Hope that all helps, you can tweet me for more advice and I'll be glad to assist as I can.
