No worries, we've all been there, especially less than 24 hours after starting!
 If someone is not following you, you cannot Direct Message them. The only way to contact them is by "replying" to a tweet of theirs or mentioning them in one of your own. For example, say you wanted to contact me. You could tweet: "I have no way of contacting @suitablegirl. Harrumph!" Then, I would see that tweet when I checked Twitter under "@suitablegirl" on the sidebar of my screen. Previously, someone would only see these tweets if the "@suitablegirl" was at the BEGINNING of the tweet; they changed this so now someone will see ANY mention of their username, no matter where it's stuck in the 140 characters.
