Why do we need updates in our e-mail?

Who thinks this new yahoo mail is dreadful? I don't want to get updates from friends on my email and certainly don't want to have to keep cancelling the update suggestions every time I sign in. I don't want my contact names visible on my home page as they are private.
I want an e-mail account not one that is trying to be Facebook and Twitter. At least we should be able to hide the update column if we don't want to use it. Anyone like the new features?

They call it progress and sometimes the new
stuff is quite good
The only person to see your home page is you
it is as private as your email page.
And we don't have to use the Im or the chat
lines if we don't want
I like my mail page for just that sending
mail and receiving it of course
