Do Facebook applications automatically send invites to other users, or do the users have to send them manually?

I get invites for the bumper sticker application etc. all the time, and I was just wondering if the people are actually inviting me to join, or if it was just the applications automatically sending me invites.

People have to send the invites, it's against the rules for applications to send out things automatically.
