Between the launch of the iPad and the recent announcement of the forthcoming OS 4 for iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple has had a busy April. Although we still have to wait for the official summer debut of OS 4 (autumn for iPad users), there’s no harm in thinking about the increased functionality multitasking will bring. Sure, users will run the usual suspects such as Facebook or their favorite Twitter app, but here are some other apps that are likely to do it right.

Radio

Perhaps the most anticipated benefit of multitasking will be the ability to run music apps other than iTunes while playing a game, browsing Safari or reading an iBook. The primary beneficiaries of this are sure to be the Pandora Radio (free) and Last.FM. (free) iPhone apps. However, the subscriber-based Sirius XM Premium Online (free) and Chicago Public Radio’s This American Life ($2.99) could see an uptick in use now that the iPhone or iPod doesn’t have to devote its energy to those apps alone.
Communication

When push notifications rolled out last year, they gave a boost to instant messaging apps such as Trillian ($4.99). Now, running iPhone apps like this or the free Nimbuzz, which offers support for Yahoo!, AIM, Facebook, MySpace, Google Talk and Skype chats simultaneously, will allow users to respond to messages that much faster, all while running their radio app of choice, for instance. Of course, the biggest player in this category is the VoIP Skype (free), which will now support calls in the background while you look up maps or movie times in other apps.

Location

It remains to be seen if check-in apps like Foursquare (free), Gowalla (free) and Whrrl 3 (free) will see any increase in use once multi-tasking launches, but this is the move Loopt (free) has been waiting for. One of the first find-your-friends networks out there, Loopt’s original downfall was the inability to run in the background. Now if the iPhone app can update your location instantaneously while open, the service may see resurgence.
Sports

Sports fans will also love keeping up with scores in the background through apps like Sportacular Pro ($1.99) and ESPN ScoreCenter (free). Ideally, MLB.com At Bat 2010 ($14.99) will run in the background similar to other radio iPhone apps, too.
Navigation

Often-lost iPhone users should now relish the ability to run a nav iPhone app with guided voice in the background behind other processes. Apple has confirmed that TomTom U.S.A. ($59.99) will be supported through multi-tasking, but the hope is that other apps like the critic-darling MotionX GPS Drive (99 cents) or iMapMyRide+ ($4.99) will work as well.
