actually i have registered for twitter.com.but i am new to it.
can anyone explain as to what exactly it is?

You post very short messages (140 chars). You can direct these responses to another user if you know that user's name. If you want to send something to "tony" you'd include this in your message:

@tony I agree.

and the user "tony" would be notified. That's about it.
