• Write tweets that are of interest to others. State facts you learn or share statistics you read. Use humor to grab the attention of people or share your favorite jokes. Decide what type of people you want to attract and write tweets that interest them. These users could then share your tweets with their followers.

• Use hash tags to join an ongoing conversation. A hash tag is a "#" followed by a phrase or word. For example, "#followFriday" is a hash tag commonly used to show other users people they should follow. Another common hash tag is "#writechat". This is used by writers who use Twitter to network and share ideas with other writers. From time to time, users may retweet these conversational tweets and your tweet will then appear on their page.

• Ask the user for a retweet. It never hurts to just ask other people to share a tweet of yours with their followers. Use the phrasing "Pls RT". This is common lingo on Twitter for those who want a retweet.

• Use an "@ reply" to communicate with a user. Unlike on Facebook, you cannot just comment on someone's tweet directly on his page. Instead you must type in your tweet box: "@" followed by the user name and your comment. All of this must be 140 characters or less.
