How do I send someone a message on twitter?

Is there a way to private message someone? Or do I just do my own status update, but include @ before the name of the person I want it to be sent to?

To send a private message, you have to be following the person and they have to follow you.

To send a direct message, simply type "d username" then the message, without the quotes. Anything after the username will be your message.
