How do you know someone's sent you a message on twitter?

I am not sure how to use twitter yet. I am assuming you would get a notification like on facebook saying you have a message. I was just checking in case that was not the case. Thanks

I think it depends on how you set you set up your account - am still trying to get my head around how you use it, someone I know reckons it could take about 5-6 months to understand it completely - depends on how fast you learn!!
