Or can I update twitter by sending a text to a special number?

Yes you have to activate the GPRS service to use twitter or any similar social messenger services. It uses an internet connection to work.

No internet is required. You can send/receive updates through texting. In the U.S. the number is 40404. Keep in mind text message charges still apply.
