Why did xbox live go offline for 24 hours?

I usually go on live every 2 days or so, and yesterday LIVE sent me a message about xbox live being shut down for 24 hours.
Can anyone tell me why?

Because they're uploading Facebook and Twitter, among other changes.

Yes, no1 was able to g0 on Xbox Live yesterday because it went a undergoing scheduled maintanence.

for updates, they occasionally do that

According to Major Nelson, there will NOT be any updates coming from this downtime. It is simply in preparation for the fall and all of the games coming out right now. All they are doing is maintenance on the servers. There will be no Facebook and/or Twitter yet. That is coming in the Fall Update, just like any other huge item.
