How to reply to someone on Twitter via txt?

when I reply to someone, I just press the reply button on my phone and it leaves me a blank text message and I add the @username to reply. But my friend complains that she wants to actually read our conversations, because on the web there's an actual reply button so you don't have to type in the username, and then you can read the entire conversation. But on the phone, typing the username is only a mention, so you can't see what tweet I'd replied to.
