How do trending topics begin on Twitter?
I know that important news events are likely to trend on twitter because of the number of people tweeting about it, but what about those strange hashtags? How do those begin? (Such as #ReplaceMovieTitleWithBacon)

I never started one, but I assume someone with a lot of followers starts it or retweets it and it catches on. For example if Rihanna or One Direction tweets "hi" it will get 1000+ retweets...my guess is they could start a trend pretty easily.
