How do internet scammers target their information?

One of the safest ways to protect yourself from online scams is to keep in mind that if you get an email or see a website with an offer that just sounds too good to be true, chances are it likely is. Many scammers know that people often fall down on their luck, and are likely looking for a way out, and they take advantage of that by sending offers that someone in a difficult position couldn't resist, just so they can get their personal information. The best policy is that if you get an email from someone you don't know, or are not affiliated with in any way, just hit delete and keep going.

Social network exploitation: There is a widespread twitter scam targeting job seekers claiming that they can make thousands a day using twitter all day. They just have to give credit card info in order to charge shipping and handling. In the fine print the scam appears in the form of monthly charges of $100 a month or more, and the contract is difficult to break. Facebook, Myspace, etc all have a similar problem.

False Testimonials: market a specific product, and then set up multiple URL's in the form of Blog's that testify as to how great that product is. The customer then buys a low quality product for a high amount.

Phishing Get the password, and you have access to a wealth of personal information and in some cases passwords to other sites.

Remember there have always been scammers, only now with the internet they have access to a much larger group of potential victims, and the goal is to get a credit card or soc. sec. number, after that it's over. But check it out on the BBB website
