Spiritually speaking, why do people as a whole in this (western) culture aspire to be like the famous people?

Spiritually speaking, why do people as a whole in this (western) culture aspire to be like the famous people?
of today? most of them do no good for the world around them, and they live in their own little bubbles of narcissism, getting attention, trying to look better than they already do, ignoring problems of other people, being self-absorbed, caring mostly about looks, marrying for money, fame, etc.
i wonder why we as a society look up to those people.
a few famous people today are not bad like what i described. angelina jolie is a good example, she not only does humaniatarian work and works in those poor countries for weeks/months/whatever at a time WITH the people who need the help, but she stands for good values, self-respect, self-acceptance and self-discovery and honesty, etc.
she is a good role model. meanwhile we have people like "rihanna" who sings the lrics that were written by someone else along to music made by someone else, and then gets tons of pictures taken of her doing utterly dispicable things (like getting back with her abusive boyfriend, calling other girls racist names on twitter).
it's a shame to me and i wonder WHY do we look up to these kinds of people?
angelina jolie would be one of the very few exceptions, because i can come up with a long list of people who don't deserve to be looked up to because they are horrible people inside, even though they are more attractive outside.

p.s. this is not a rant, i am just writing all this to set up my question, so you know what i mean when i ask it. hopefully that was successful.

my question is why do people as a whole in this (western) culture aspire to be like the famous people who we see everywhere we go? such as kim kardashian, nicki minaj, lil wayne, drake, victoria secret models, etc.

i see famous people as being the society or world's subconscious pinnacle of humanity... most people on the internet will say they hate these people but if they look at news about them and pay attention to them, subconsciously they do view these people very highly.

It's the primate instinct to get to the higher branches of the communal tree.

I don't. The LAST thing I would want is to be famous. I much prefer my meek lifestyle. I'd go insane if I had paparazzi following me all the time.

"kim kardashian, nicki minaj, lil wayne, drake, victoria secret models," - I honestly wouldn't now what one of these people look like, not one of them ... but the victoria secret models I might just go and Google them now , purely for research mind ...

don't confuse "western" culture with "american" culture, the two are not one and the same.

your question is still valid, but I think the looking glass needs to be adjusted.

I can not comment on why american culture is the way it is, as I'm only a distant observer with 3rd hand+ accounts to rely on.
