Gilbert Ferreira, 77, of Somerset, MA, and Marco Island, FL, passed away after a brief illness, on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Saint Anne’s Hospital, in Fall River, MA. He was the husband of Lois A. (Mullen) Ferreira, for thirty-five years.

Gilbert was born, in Fall River, MA, the son of the late Manuel and Isabel (Bishop) Ferreira. He served his country with the Massachusetts Army National Guard. For over forty years, Mr. Ferreira worked alongside some of the finest labor leaders in the country. He held the position of business agent for Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union Local 177, in Fall River, MA. Gil also worked as a Labor Relations Secretary for the United Fund Staff. In 1977, Gilbert began his position as the Southeast Regional Coordinator for the American Federation of State County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 93. He retired from this position, in 1997.

Mr. Ferreira was the past vice president of the Massachusetts AFL-ClO, former Assistant Director of the United Fund of Greater Fall River, past president of the United Labor Council of Fall River AFL-CIO, and Citizens for Citizens. He was a former state appointed member of the Somerset Housing Authority, and the Somerset Democratic Town Committee. Mr. Ferreira received the Arnold M. Dubin Award from UMASS at Dartmouth, for his dedication to the cause of labor and his belief in higher education for all workers. Gil was the president of the Condo Association at “Mutiny of Marco”, in Marco Island, for several years. He also was a long time member of the Baker’s Beach Association, in Westport, and the Residents Beach, in Marco Island. He cherished the times he spent with his family and friends, taking walks on the beach and discussing current political topics.

Survivors, besides his wife, Lois, are a daughter: Gail Cookson and her husband, Bruce, of Somerset, MA; two sons: Bruce Ferreira and his wife, Suzanne, of Somerset, MA; Thomas McCabe and his wife, Ellen, of Fall River, MA; five grandchildren: Thomas, Stacy, Beth, Christopher, and Zachary; a great-grandson: Tyler; along with several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Edward Ferreira.
