I find it strange they don't want older people to opt in; only younger people. If SSI were a ponzi scheme the younger contributors rs would be paying for the older ones. Since the younger ones aren't paying for the older ones(their money is going into the stock market) it is therefore not a ponzi scheme. Does this worry you?
Yet privatization may be scheme unto itself? What would billions if not trillions of newly promised money dumped into the stock market do but float early investors to the top? Ads |

Yes. The market always fails and is too risky to depend on long term.

If I had been able to take my social security contributions and invest them in the stock market when the market crashed I would have lost half of my retirement funds.
Instead the government took my contributions and spent them on other things so I have lost 100% of my contributions. yeah government |

Yes, the government is after profit. Profit as in gigantic political power saying what company gets the government's investment bankroll that is rightfully our own money.
Socialist security should be deferred back into our own pockets. We can put it in the stock market if we want to or buy pizza with it. It's our own bloomin' money! |

The stock market has been a reasonable strategy for LONG TERM investments, which is why it makes sense for younger people and not older people. There are somewhat less risky investments as well (e.g., the bond market).
There's no guarantee that any private investment will grow or even preserve your wealth. But as we've seen there's no guarantee that if give your money to the government instead that they won't just spend it all and hope that future taxpayers will cough up enough money for your retirement. |
