Talking to crush on social network?

So at the end of the school year last year I started to like this girl, but before I could really talk to her school ended and I had no way of talking to her during summer. Anyway I come back to school to find out she changed schools (a school very close to mine, same city) so I really have no way to talk to her in person. I can talk to her over social networking sites though (facebook, twitter) so I was wondering whats a good way to start a conversation on a social networking site without it becoming awkward. Well if you have her number what you can do is go.,, "Hey I'm clearing out old phone contacts and I came across this one. May I ask who this is?" Then you can make a conversation from there. Worked well with me. As for facebook, just go like "hey, havent seen you in awhile. Hows the new school?" Not as nice as the the phone but I've done it before. Even if it is awkward, it won't take long for them to get used to it. If you truly want to know her better you will do it I bet.
