I'm not licensed but I have experience working with pets, I have a pet of my own, and I sometimes baby sit my friends dog.
I just need a little job to do, some of my friends when we were in high school did it?
How much should I charge an hour?

Charge around 10 dollars an hour. Make sure you don't put down your address on the flyer and have them contact you by your phone number only.

First, find out what's out there. Search "dog walking in [your city]" to see the dog walker services that are out there. You could even apply for a job at one of those services, which would make marketing yourself a little easier independently of the clients at your new workplace because you have professional experience as a dog walker. Next, check out your city's Craigslist. Put a posting up on Craigslist to advertise yourself. Make sure you sound friendly and like you love dogs. You may want to include a brief bio about yourself and--if you do--mention that you have pets. You will also need to include an email address or phone number at which prospective clients may reach you. Try to make it sound neighborhood-specific. If you are in a particular area of the city or know there are many dogs in a particular neighborhood, include that in the "location" section of your posting. Ex: Logan Square/Bucktown/Lincoln Park One post, you will soon learn, is not nearly enough. Craigslist entries move fast, so continue to repost this once or twice a week.
You will also want to employ social media in your marketing. If you have a Facebook account, let your friends know that you are looking for dog walking opportunities by writing a note. Mention that if they don't have a dog, to let you know if anyone they know needs a dog walker. Marketing often happens best through word of mouth. Twitter is also a great way to market you. Perhaps you could create a Twitter account devoted to dogs or dog walking, and you could even tweet about the dogs that you walk. Their owners could follow you on Twitter, perhaps, and get updates about the antics that their dogs are up to! This would be a novel idea and perhaps it would catch the attention of local media. Twitter is a hot topic these days, and when people use social media in innovative ways, the media pays attention. Any extra publicity you can get for your business will help your marketing efforts. Finally, design some flyers. You've seen these flyers before. You can design them on your computer, or design them by hand. Hand-drawn flyers often work well because they have a personal touch. Write neatly, and include some designs to make your flyer attractive. Leave room at the bottom to cut pull-tags so people walking by can take your information and contact you later. Use scissors to cut several 2 cm strips at the bottom of the page. Make sure your name and a quick summary of your ad is on each of those strips. Something like: "Need a dog walker for your pooch? Call Mindy at XXX-XXX-XXX" works well. Once again, just one flyer is not enough. You will need to make many, depending on how far you want to market your services. Go around the neighborhood and tape these flyers up on light posts (if allowed), in coffee shops, and at local community centers like the library, the gym, and the YMCA. Finally, get some business cards printed. They don't cost much, and they're helpful if you meet potential customers on the street while you're walking the dogs. Smile, be personable, and let them know that if they ever need a dog walker, you'd love to walk their dog too!
