I can't figure this out on Twitter? Help?

How exactly do I send a message to someone on twitter so that they will see it??? I've tried doing the @username in the box on the side, and the person never wrote back but yet he replies to other people who send him messages. Am I sending messages the wrong way? What is the best way to send a message with the person seeing it?

I'm following the person, but he isn't following me, so I know I can't send a direct message. And this guy has A LOT of followers.

if this person is famous or has lots of followers it is likely they will not respond, if you go on there profile you can press the blue square at the top this will instantly address it to them it should come up on there 'discover' section if they're not following you. hope I helped
