In short, there are many downsides to it, one being that when you purchase followers most of them are bots. Meaning they will only be on your account for a few days or so before they get banned by twitter.
As an alternative I purchased my entire twitter account on ebay. There was a seller on there selling 30 000 follower accounts for 20 bucks or so. The account I got had almost 40 000 and I used it to skyrocket my business. The upside to this is that the followers are real and wont be gone in a couple days.
