what does it mean when there is a (1) next to twitter?

in facebook it means u have a new notification...but i cant find it anywhere in twitter

it means you have a interaction (someone has mentioned you, followed you, favourited or retweeted one of your tweets)

or you have a direct message

to find your interactions click on the @ symbol with 'connect' written next to it
to find your message click on the little picture of the persons head at the very top right of the screen and a drop menu you should appear, choose "direct messages"

it means someone you followed has just tweeted something new
