Why blame the Mayans when it was westerners who came up with this "end of the world" stuff?

The history channel and the "end of days" book writers are cashing in on the so called Mayan prophecy. But I read the mayans didn't predict the end of the world, they just ran out of calendar. So, why is everyone (especially on twitter) blaming the Mayans when it was westerners who came up with and heavily promoted all of this?
