Why don't people answer me on Twitter?

So I have about 35 followers and I always tweet stuff like "what is everyone up to today?" and even send some direct messages but no one ever answers me. Is this because they're spam and only respond if my tweet mentions something like a need or service? How can I get rid of the spam followers? It upsets me that people are following me if all they want is to sell their crap to me. I thought the purpose of Twitter was to keep up with friends.

Indeed, many of the people on Twitter are bots, designed for the sole purpose of advertising or other annoying things. There's not really much you can do about them other than ignore them, that's due to the very nature of Twitter, it's openness. Another suggestion would be to bring your real-life friends to Twitter, they'll surely respond to your tweets

Ya I notice that too with face book. Hardly anyone messages me without me messaging them first. It's rare for me to get a message from anyone out of the blue.
Sometimes I will get a reply months after I send a message. I guess that's the way things are. People are busy and don't get to go online all that much. Other times people have tons of messages in their in boxes and it takes a while for them to respond to you.

Some don't see their direct messages because it's hidden in their list thingys, and they don't really know you, or because they want their privacy or something.
You can just decline or ignore the spam followers, because there isn't really something you can do to stop people following you.
