I'm looking to replace a six year old Vivitar camera that I paid about $100 for. I got some pretty decent shots from that camera.

I'd like to spend about the same. I'd like something that has good battery life.

Your only recourse is to check eBay for a six year old digital camera. A decent digital camera today has at least a 5x optical zoom lens (3x zooms are a waste of money). Digital cameras cost in the range of $120 and up, for a simple point and shoot model. look at Fuji and Olympus for the best values. Remember a first class stamp costs more today than six years ago! And gas? well that's another (depressing) thing all together.

Good Luck!

I'm surprised you were happy with the images produced by your old Vivitar camera...which is essentially, a crappy no name brand.

$100 (or slightly higher) will only get you a budget entry level model. Canon is an excellent brand, but many people think their cameras are unaffordable.
However they do make budget entry level models. The worst thing about these budget models are their slow flash recycle times, so if you intend to take a lot of shots with flash...you should look elsewhere.
But, image quality...particularly in good bright light, is excellent.

Have a look at the Canon A495...

14 megapixels for high-quality pictures
5X optical zoom
3 in. bright LCD
One-button upload to e-mail, Kodak Gallery, YouTube, Facebook, ORKUT, and FLICKR sites
