How can a person stop being obsessed with the internet?
I leave the house every day to get away from it.(don't have a cell thank goodness.)Ten minutes after returning home I'm back on my computer checking facebook comments etc.. I think I have an addiction to it every since I quit smoking. Surely there are many others like me out there so the answers should be an interesting.

Find something else you enjoy doing, especially things you can do with your friends. Think about old people like me who didn't have access to the internet for 30 or 40 years.

I wouldn't really call it an obsession, since you seem to know where the limits are most of the times and you really want to stay away from it by going out. I really applaud you on this.

In your case, I think the problem has to do with specific sites on the internet. First of all, you seem to really like spending time on facebook. You should definitely try to do something about that, i.e. deactivate your account for a while or avoid checking it too often. Secondly, it's very positive that you don't have a cellphone because the temptation of using it for internet browsing is very intense and it's hard to resist, especially if you're bored.

Apart from that, I must tell you that I am in a similar situation somewhat; I have a smartphone and I am not a person that likes doing work and has trouble concentrating so I try to occupy myself by going on facebook, reading stuff on twitter, checking my video subscriptions on youtube etc. I have a laptop too but my schedule combined with my slow work completion doesn't allow me to surf the web from there on weekdays. In general, I feel like we may be in the same situation.

I don't think that the fact you recently quit smoking has to do anything with the time that you spend online. It's just a coincidence. Maybe you need to find more things to do when at home so as to keep yourself away from the internet more. Setting a limit on your computer time is also helpful! Smile

You could cancel your ISP contract. Give your PC/Laptop to a friend/relative until you're weened off it. Alternatively, you could devote your internet time to other, healthier pursuits like say, volunteering for charity or community projects. That would be good because you'd be helping others by helping yourself.

Facebook is all about providing audiences to advertisers. Unless you're organising an uprising (as Facebook users did in Tunisia, Egypt...etc) it's just a gigantic waste of time.

It helps to realize the internet is a sham, a fake. You think you are getting something out of it when you really aren't.

It is like if you sat at your computer for four hours waiting for somebody to answer your question and they never did. You would feel lonely and empty.

Get rid of your computer. lol

Okay that would probably be a little drastic. Just find other things to do, like read a book, learn to play an instrument, exercise, write ...

P.S. Congratulations on quitting smoking! I've heard that's extremely difficult to do. You should be proud.

Find something else to do, put limits on it, get rid of it.
