The band got it's name from a comedy skit contained in the movie "Elephant Parts" by former Monkee Michael Nesmith.

I don't know if they have impacted Canada or the world with there music. And perhaps most importantly, they bring attention to the most fascinating microscopic facets of Canadian history and culture. This is a success story that is unique itself, its country, and most definitely its band.

But why is it just a Canadian thing? When one looks at the following outside their native land, there only seem to be scattered pockets of fans the "Get It." Even in the United States, a country that has wholeheartedly supported [for better or worse] imports like Neil Young, The Band, The Guess Who, Alanis Morrissete, Nickelback, The Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Scene [to name a bare minimum'], The Tragically Hip exist only at a cult-level. And 90% of that support is received from displaced Canucks that still love The Hip as much as those who reside north of the border. Some markets do have larger followings, like Seattle, Detroit, and Minnesota [though this is chiefly due to geographic location more than anything].

So they have not impacted Canada or the world as much as one would think after hearing their music. Actually my son turned them on to me a long time ago now.

Sorry I could not give you more

take care dave

Here you go:
http://www.funtrivia.com/en/subtopics/Th...85544.html

CD Single in aid of the "Friends of Clayoquot Sound". Contains only the song "Land" performed live at Clayoquot Sound on July 15, 1993
Produced by Daniel Lanois
Written by Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie, Peter Garrett, Gord Downie, Daniel Lanois and Liam O'Maonlai
Performed by Crash Vegas, Hothouse Flowers, Daniel Lanois, Midnight Oil, The Tragically Hip

In spite of the fact that they are one of Canada's better musical acts, they are not widely popular outside of Canada.
