IT was not easy to find but I have cut and pasted this out of the help section in FB. Twitter I don't do that .

How do I deactivate my account?

To deactivate your account:
Click the account menu at the top right of any Facebook page
Select Account Settings
Click Security in the left-hand column
Click Deactivate your account
When you deactivate your account, your timeline and all information associated with it disappears from Facebook immediately. People on Facebook will not be able to search for you or view any of your information.

If you’d like to come back to Facebook anytime after you’ve deactivated your account, you can reactivate your account by logging in with your email and password. Your timeline will be restored in its entirety (friends, photos, interests, etc.). Remember that you will need to have access to the login email address for your account in order to reactivate it.

Log into Facebook.
In the upper right corner on your home page, click the down arrow. Then click "Account Settings." On the left side of screen, click "Security." Scroll down the page and click "Deactivate account".
Arrive at the page that will ask you, "Are you sure you want to deactivate your account?" You will see a group of your friends appear in very large photos, enticing you to remain.
Check the box to describe why you are deactivating.
Fill in the text box to "explain further" (optional).
Check the box for "Email opt out." Doing this lets you opt out of receiving future emails from Facebook. If you don't select this, your friends can still invite you to events, tag you in photos or ask you to join groups. Opting out prevents them from sending emails and notifications anymore.
Press the "deactivate" button. Your account will now be "hidden" from other viewers on Facebook. However, you will still have the option of re-activating your account at any time.

Sign in to twitter.com
Go to your Account settings and click on Deactivate my account at the bottom of the page.
Read the account deactivation information. Click Okay, fine, deactivate account.
Enter your password when prompted and verify that you want to deactivate your account.
