How to get followers on twitter?

I have 190 followers at the moment and am in a little competition with my friend to see who can get the most.
Any tips and/or good things to say on twitter to get an increasing amount of followers would be appreciated thaaaanks.

Yes, post very polemic stuff on trending topics, and tweet a lot until you grab other peoples attention.

also, focus on tweeting on a certain topic

you can create a blog and build an audience from there and promote your account.

Social exchange websites like http://www.socialclerks.com/ might be what you are looking for. It doesn't get any simpler then this trust me. You just like/subscribe/follow others and they will follow you, this is why I suggest you create some accounts only for this reason.

Its way better compared manual promotion or following a lot of people and waiting till some of them will follow back.

Ask your followers to give you shoutout and then they will tweet saying follow (whoever) and there followers will see it and hopefully follow you.
Say you will return it for them to help them get followers.
