What are some good local restaurants in San Francisco?

My husband and I are going to be staying in the Nob Hill area of San Francisco. We would like to try some good local food, but not spend a ton. We would like to see a lot of the city (Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate bridge, etc.), so any suggestions around the are are appreciated!

If you're at Fisherman's Wharf there is a famous San Francisco restaurant called Boudin. They make their own sourdough bread, and they're famous for their clam chowder. The bread is a higher quality than if you were to get clam chowder at some of the stands nearby. It's at 160 Jefferson St.

If you like Indian food there is a restaurant in Nob Hill called Darbar Restaurant. It's at 1412 Polk St, and it's cheap and deliciously authentic.

I strongly recommend you avoid any restaurants on Powell Street. Those are all highly priced, and the quality of food is terrible. The only exception might be Blondie's Pizza, which has really damn good pizza surprisingly for a touristy downtown area.

If you like Sushi, you really should try Sushirrito. I'm not sure you can get something like this anywhere else. It's sushi, but it's as big as a burrito, and amazingly delicious too. It's at 59 New Montgomery St and it's a block from Market right next to the Montgomery Bart/Muni station.

If you want a Vietnamese sandwich fix, you should also definitely go to Saigon Sandwiches which has the best Vietnamese sandwiches in the City. It's only 2 blocks north of the Asian Art Museum at 560 Larkin St, so you can get two sandwiches that are only $4 each, and then head over to the Asian Art Museum and eat on their lawn, and then see some very cool art afterwards. Saigon Sandwiches also has delicious tapioca and they also have mouth watering pork or chicken buns with egg inside. For sandwiches I recommend the chicken, meatball, or tofu, if you like pate they also offer that. so you can get chicken + pate, for example. It just costs $1 more I think. Also if you can't take the heat, ask for no peppers.

If you're in North Beach visiting the Italian cafes and places like Coit Tower/Telegraph Hill, which you gotta see because there is a family of wild parrots that live on that hill, and they are so beautiful and fun to see, but if you go there you should definitely check out Geleteria Naia, 520 Columbus Ave. Personally, it's my favorite gelato restaurant because of their Thai Young Coconut flavor gelato, but they also have like 6 different kinds of chocolate gelato and 20 other different random flavors.

Another good gelato place if you don't stop by North Beach is Holy Gelato! I actually feel bad for the locals who live near there. I am pretty sure a number of people would literally kill me if they found out I told people about this area. But it's on 9th Avenue near Irving (1392 9th Ave is the actual address), and it's this charming little neighborhood with restaurants and neat shops, that's probably as far from touristy as you can get. And it's not inconvenient to get to at all. You just take the N Muni like you're headed to the ocean, and get off at 9th Ave. After some tasty gelato, you can catch the next Muni which might be 20 minutes, and keep heading down to the Ocean for some walk on the beach fun! Oh and they have really fun flavors like Condoleezza Rice Pudding, Cookie Monster, Yoda Green Tea, and my favorite Honey-Lavender.

And if you can't tell I don't really love gelato and ice cream, If you're in the Mission, and you want to try something really different you can't get anywhere, you should try Humphry Slocombe (2790 Harrison St). Their ice cream is so unique. They have flavors like Salt and Pepper, Foie Gras, and Guiness Gingerbread. They're all crazy, but interesting to try, if you want something milder and more "normal" my personal favorite is the Golden Beet Safron Sorbet. But they change their ice cream frequently, so you never know what they have to offer unless you're following them on Twitter.

And if you're in the Mission, you most definitely have to try out some of their local Mexican cuisine. My personal favorites are El Metate (2406 Bryant St) (their vegetarian nachos are out of this world), and Papalote (3409 24th St) for their delicious Prawn Burrito and freshly made guacamole and chips. But also, I'm from the Midwest so good Mexican food is kind of hard to come by, so compared to that, just about every Taqueria in the Mission where you see most of the tables filled is going to be deliciously awesome!

There are many fantastic dining spots in San Francisco however, if you are looking for less inexpensive eats, I recommend Anchor Oyster Bar (Seafood), Arizmendi Bakery (pizza), Don Pistos (Mexican Fare), Il Pollaio (Chicken dishes), Cafe Noeteca (Small Plates), The Sycamore (Gastropub) or if you go to the Ferry Building you will have some great choices for quick bites. These restaurants are not specific to Nob Hill but good eats throughout the city.

As far as activities and attractions, Fort Point is located directly under the Golden Gate Bridge giving a unique vantage point. Point Bonita Lighthouse is on Sausalito has beautiful views, and Sutro Baths at point lobos is a historical landmark located on the shores of the San Francisco Bay. Cable cars are also a great way to enjoy SF. There are so many things to do and see in the city, my suggestion would be to conduct some research based on your interests.
