What is the best way to advertise my blog without having to resort to a desperate status post on facebook?

It's in the title. I would prefer not to ask my facebook friends as I would prefer outside input. I don't wish to share it through YA, however any other ideas are appreciated.

but i bet you are wanting it to be online
so get an add for a billboard about you posting blogs
then people will go to the site to see whats up

You really should tell us what your blog is about... you could mention your blog when on a forum about that subject... It's a fine line, though... some forums choose not to distinguish between related (outside) material, and robot spam... which is extremely insulting.

social bookmarking
forums in your niche with your web address in signature line (good for back links too)
