Not sure if this applies - but think about Yelp, which started out as an aggregator of different food-oriented-businesses; it spread through people talking about it on social networking sites

We all know that all people are interested in food specially when it presentable. Think about the fast growing of photo sites, like Pinterest, Instagram, Flickr etc. It can easily tease people with their tasty looking food. That is why it is easier to market food niche compare to other niche.
