Why do people think you have to be attached to a political party?

Why do people think you have to be attached to a political party?
I am independent, believing in the economic rights republicans propose, and the social rights democrats propose (Which I think is actually libertarian). I oppose the death penalty, which the libertarians do not. Just because I am involved in politics, doesn't mean I have to be aligned with a political party. The constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech, not the right to be a democrat or republican.

Excellent question.
I have never belonged to any party and will never attach myself to any. I am too fiercely independent.
I do my homework on anyone running for office and vote accordingly.

I do not even want to belong to any social club much less to a political one.
Freedom of choice is wonderful.

I would have selected none, but the closest to that was independent.

Seldom do true independents get involved to any extent in politics. Seldom do they understand the give-and-take involved. Seldom do they commit to a variety of issues, as do partisans.

Legally there is no obligation to belong to a political party, but as a practical matter it is important if you wish to have an impact.

Your question itself demonstrates how naive you are: if you don't understand the difference between Democrats and Libertarians, you certainly don't deserve to lead either.

So go ahead. Continue to ignore politics except on election day every two years, and keep telling yourself that you're politically active and wise.

They don't.

The majority are independent.

Because if we don't unite we have no way of overthrowing the Rep/Dem duopoly. There's a lot of different issue and plenty of sides one can be on. It would be crazy to have a party for everyone single possible political view (e.g The Anti-War Fiscal Conservative Pro-Free Markets Pro-choice Constitutionalist Party). This is just one reason why I believe the LP is good. Libertarianism allows for everyone to have their own viewpoints so long as they fit under the banner of freedom. And controversial issues are usually delegated to the state's to decide (if we had a libertarian government).
