Whether to use 'my' or 'your' in a web address (psychology/philosophy/marketing)?
why is youtube not called metube?

When a person uses a service (Esp. on the web) provided by someone else whose name or context contains the concept of self and uses the words 'me' or 'you' or derivatives, which one is preferable?

I ask because I recently ruined a fair amount of planning by suddenly realising the word 'my' in the URL of a website I'm building would be better changed to 'your'. My thinking was that when the customer reads the word 'my', it could refer to the person reading it but might (more properly in most cases) be interpreted as being the person who wrote it. It's known how fickle web users are and I can't afford for anyone to be put off over such a simple choice.

'Your' is telling the customer unambiguously right from the start the service is there for them, whereas 'my' could be taken either way.

I'm sure this has been discussed at great length by academics or even board room decision makers but what answers did they come up with?

- Does 'me' ever put people off?
- Is 'your' better for getting customers to feel some ownership over the subject matter?
- Do I need a psychiatrist? (to answer the question I mean)

Thx in advance to any professionals or deep thinkers who can give me ideas to work on.
Thank you seajamit Smile

The website I'm making is for building a custom made product with, for example, a particular length, width and colour and fittings etc... then make an order which I fulfil so it's not exactly 'personal' to the customer like your example of myroom.com

So buildmywhatever.com or buildyourwhatever.com are the choices - My does work here, me doesn't

So so far it's 'your'

As a user and not a professional I would say that I feel "my" refers to a personal website , a website where personal things matter most, so myroom.com for example, its personal to you. . "You" is more of a social thing in my opinion because you can interpret it as the web designer speaking to the users etc etc. Its better to use you for social networks because of this and that's why YouTube works so well.

Me or my I feel is the same but I believe my is better.
