How does someone respond to your tweet on Twitter?

When I tweet a message to my friend's twitter page, my tweet always show up on my twitter page. Why is that and will my followers/friends still respond?

That's a normal tweet. If you want the message to go directly to your friend, you can use a DM (direct message). It will go to your friend's message inbox. A normal tweet will reach and be seen by all your followers + the public.
