I want to start a child locater service?
I see amber alerts all the time and I want to help. I've looked up several companies offering GPS services for children but none seem to offer dealerships.

What does it take to start a service such as this?

Exactly what kind of service are you proposing? Giving children a GPS bracelet? Imbedding a GPS chip in their body? Just helping to search?? You need a specific idea and/or product.

I work for a truck driving school which trains truck drivers how to drive trucks. To make a long story short, we needed a special GPS with location abilities for our fleet of trucks. We had the same issues as you when trying to buy the off shelf GPS devices or when trying to cooperate with dealerships.

A new student of ours had a GPS device from a random company. Supposedly this company did one offs or made private devices for special needs. We approached this company with our needs and they designed a system for us from the ground up - if you can't find a dealer then I would contact them - maybe they can build you - your own GPS tracking system to use with your service. Couple that device with what you have researched and with others have recommended and perhaps you will have a great idea on your hands.

The driving student had this device http://www.newelectronx.com

If you are unable to acquire the GPS equipment, you could still help children by using the 'social media' to alert the public. The obvious contender being blogger Twitter.

You could call your tag something like this:

- '@ChildLocatorUS'

and tweet using #hashtags as given by my example:

- "#US #America #Arkansas Missing Child Amber Alert! 10yo girl Janey is about 4'11" 100lb wearing black pants & yellow top."

Also you could wisely use the #Canada or #Mexico hashtags, if the American state is on those borders.

How will you know who's missing?
Contact (email) your state's police, indeed many other states. Ask them to agree to immediately email or tweet you. And you can also retweet those messages, in addition to doing your own tweet.

Hope we've helped....
