Why do country people say they are proud to be a redneck?
Redneck refers to a low income white person who is considered trash by the general public.

Why do so many country people market themselves as rednecks?

I see on Facebook they have pages in support of being a redneck and country singers sing songs about being proud to be a redneck.

What is the deal?

If a low I.Q. is all you have, be proud of it.

If you are poor and uneducated it is a better option than loathing yourself because of it. I am all for having pride in yourself and your background, but where it gets ridiculous is when they project this pride onto others, thinking that other people think being an uneducated hick somehow means they are more 'real'.

It just shows ignorance and acceptance of low standards of living and gives an excuse not to change anything.

Every time I hear someone say the words "Y'all" I want to slap them, particularly if they were not born and raised in the south. They think it makes them sound down to earth and folksy, when in truth they are just using improper English and showcasing their ignorance. They are nothing other than the flip-side of the poor black community that also esteems itself on being anti-intellectual.

It depends on your definition of a redneck and your point of view.

MANY do NOT use YOUR given definition of a redneck.

Having seen what some people put up with in large cities, many would NOT want to be considered "city" people either.
