There is wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Wordpress.com doesn't allow you to add any advertising. I think they allow it, if you give them a portion. On the other hand, wordpress.org allows you to have control over your ads, plugins, etc.

You can add advertisement onto your wordpress by using google adwords, yahoo advertising solutions, bing ad center.

You can even use amazon affiliate marketing to add some links to your site and make income through purchases made from your site.

The thing that is important is driving traffic to your site/blog. Without traffic, your conversion rate will be very low.

Ways to drive traffic to your site/blog is by:

providing viewers good content
studying keywords (seo) you can do this by using google adwords center (keyword tools search)
social media is a key factor. Make sure to integrate facebook, twitter and pinterest
