There were a number of reasons. Slaves were valuable assets and if slavery was abolished a lot of people would lose a large portion of their holdings. Slave trading was a profitable business and that would be gone too. Some people just objected to any federal interference including for slavery.
Most of the argument was about federal interference in state authority. Slavery was just one issue in that battle. The increased tariffs certain to come when the Republican Party took control was the primary issue that caused secession. The Democratic Party and its liberal policies then (it has mostly progressive policies now) ran contrary to the policies of Republican Party conservative and progressive factions (progressives began within the Republican Party). The people who were for it thought slavery was morally wrong. So did some slave holders like Jefferson but so long as others had them economic necessity forced their retention. Jefferson and others supported abolition of slavery with the new constitution (today's) but it was voted down. True liberalism advocates: individual freedom, weak government, and free markets. Conservatism advocates: moral responsibility, strong government, and protected markets. Progressives advocate: social concern, omniscient government, and controlled markets. Socialism advocates: social responsibility, omnipresent government, and collective markets. |
