Defamation (slander and libel) isn't about what is right and wrong. It's about someone's reputation being damaged. In many places, you can still be fired if you are believed to be gay, and many still bullying, ostracize, and even physically attack gays. Also, let's mention what it does when a married man is accused of being gay.

I hope not. How insecure a person would have to be to even try that...

It is not a crime or bad to be gay so they cannot sue you because you are not saying something bad about them, it is like accusing a Black haired person of being blond

I'm not a lawyer yet, and the law depends on every state/country, so you might want to take my words with a grain of salt. Anyway-

---------------------------

Technically, yes.

I could mispronounce your name and that would be enough to give you grounds to sue me-

BUT

The law is flexible.

It depends on the judge if he would consider being called "Gay" as actually defamatory, if there was ill-intent, and if there are actual damages done.

yes, unless you are a public figure you can sue. If you tell a lot of people a person is gay and they agree to testify against you, or for instance you tell people someone is gay on a social network like twitter or facebook and lastly if you out someone at work to fellow employees. Outing someone at work is definitely a way to get sued. But if you accuse only that someone of being gay without telling someone else there is likely to be no case to sue someone except if you do it at work. You can get sued for just about anything at a work place when it involves any kind of sexual discrimination or any other form of harassment which telling people someone is gay is considered a form of harassment

I think that may well depend on the country. Any country in which homosexuality is illegal or culturally unaccepted i would think one could. Although if that were they case i think they would opt for assaulting you than going for the lawsuit.
