HOW do people get so many followers on twitter?!?

I just want to know why so many people have like thousands and thousands of followers on their Twitter accounts. It kind of annoys me how every time I ask someone to follow me back they have like 4,000 followers. On my old account, I've been on for like 1 year and I only have like 10 followers. Halp?!

1) How do those people do it?!
2) What are a few FOOL PROOF ways for me to get more followers?

1) They post funny, interesting, creative, and relevant tweets...not necessarily to-do lists or complaints like many users.
2) Large groups of friends, whoring themselves out to "follow-for-follow" accounts, or in some cases, buying fake accounts.

Twitter isn't necessarily about having tons of followers as much as it involves engagement. Quality over quantity any day.

What most people interested in building a large following do is start following everyone they can find on Twitter hoping to get a follow back.
