Im so confused about twitter..how does it work?!?

ok so basically, i got a twitter to follow my favorite NBA players. i don;t really plan on tweeting myself and making my own tweets, but i would like to connect with players.
what do the @ signs mean?
is it possible for an nba player to reply to me? how does a player follow ME?

i'll give you an example on another thing im confused on...

It's like facebook, but the only thing you can do is post a message and follow a person.

The sign '@' means you are mentioning someone ... and you add a user name, for example let's take my twitter user name "@THEMiKENNY You are so awesome"
..I'm going to received it only if you tweet it. To Check out your replies, there would be a category to the right, and there would be a lot of stuffs in it like trending topic, Direct Messages and stuffs.
If you see the '@' sign and then your user name, click it ... if you get a new mention, you'd get it.

RT means, Re-Tweet.
So it goes like this; #classic RT @BowWow: @nate_robinson hella throwbag my boy
@nate_robinson tweeted "hella throwbag my boy" ..then it means that @BowWow RE Tweeted it replying "i like money in the way #classic" ..and the replies are usually before the "RT".
btw, this is just a fact; If you see the Trending Topic(s), Most of the Trending Topics consists of a hash sign ..like "#"
