Can you send messages to other people on twitter.com?

i'm new on twitter and i was wondering if or how you can send messages to other people on the website cause i haven't quite figured it out yet.

but one more thing do you put your username after the @ and where do you click direct message?

You type '@username MESSAGE HERE' in the 'What are you doing?' text box or if its a private message you need to follow each other then click 'Direct Message'.

For Example @Jimmy What are you doing for lunch?
